In the parking lot for the big Southern Towers apartment complex in Alexandria, there is a self described farm market that seems to specialize in tropical fruits and vegetables. I would call it a farm stand, since it is a single vendor. It is also not a 'farm to table' operation, all of the produce is obviously being resold, probably a couple steps removed from whoever grew it originally. We found this place over the holidays, because there is also a great Christmas tree vendor in the same location.
Quibbles with nomenclature aside, I love this market and it has become a regular stop in our weekend shopping rotation. I even wrote a review on Yelp.
I like the selection of produce, especially items we need for Mexican or Indian cuisine, I like the variety of fruit, and I like the prices!
The selection above, including oranges, key limes, pineapple, fennel, jalapeño, avocado, cilantro, eggplant and strawberries was $20.50. I did not do an exact price comparison at WFM, but I think it would have been close to double. I also like the variety - multiple varieties or avocado, banana, apple, oranges, mangos, etc.
The selection changes week to week, I assume based on what is in season.
If you cook ethnic food from tropical countries, or you want to make fresh fruit juice or salad using tropical fruit, this market provides a great and cost effective source of produce.
